Bobby Curtola
Born: April, 17, 1944, in Port Arthur, Ontario Bobby Curtola was Canada's true '60's teen idol. He began singing at dances to much enthusiasm which attracted the attention of songwriting brothers Basil & Dyer Hurdon. Seeing huge potential in Curtola's natural vocal abilities and good looking boyish charm, they wrote "Hand In Hand With You" which they recorded with him in 1960.

With it's moderate success on Tartan Records the team were encouraged to continue with a carefully calculated campaign of record releases, club dates, and the early formation of the Bobby Curtola Fan Club following the phenomenal success of "Fortune Teller" and its double A-side "Johnny Take Your Time" in 1962.

The song sold over 2 million copies and became a legitimate US hit. This erupted into a successive string of hits during the fiercely competitive British Invasion era culminating into a Male Vocalist Of The Year Juno in 1965.

By 1967 his teen idol days were over and he had to re-assess his value as a performer As a teen idol he had 32 Top Ten hits from 46 released singles and over 20 albums, appeared on The Bob Hope Show, and hosted CTV's 'After Four' show. It was time for a change to cater to his aging audience. Adult contemporary seemed more suited to his new direction.

In the early '90s Curtola enjoyed an 'oldies' revival as RCA Records offered him a 5 album deal with the new wave of oldies and jumped on a greatest hits CD followed by 1994's country record 'Gotta Get Used To Be Country'.

Curtola was awarded the Order Of Canada on May 8, 1998; Curtola is married, has two sons, and currently lives in Edmonton. He still frequently performs across Canada, Las Vegas and even the Princess Cruise Lines.

Curtola purchased the SeaCzar Tomato Clam cocktail beverage mix business in 1998 and as President of this company is actively involved in the business based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

May 8, 1998
Mr. Rahim Jaffer (Edmonton—Strathcona, Ref.): Mr. Speaker, I was not born when Bobby Curtola was at the peak of his fame, but I am no less proud of him as a Canadian and a fellow Edmontonian.

Yesterday Bobby received the Order of Canada and I know that Canadians from all walks of life will join me in congratulating him not just for the award but for a lifetime of achievement.

Bobby was one of Canada's first international pop music stars, a pioneer in demonstrating that Canada is blessed with an abundance of talent.

Long before the Beatles drew throngs of screaming teens to their shows Bobby was out there on the road doing the same. Most important, Bobby Curtola proved that you can be both a superstar and a nice guy. That is what his fans will say today. Super stardom never went to Bobby's head. He was, is and will remain the sort of man we are proud to call a friend and a fellow Canadian.

Congratulations on behalf of all Canadians and Edmontonians to Bobby Curtola.

Order of Canada To Curtola
By Nathan Vardi and Dave Rogers
The Ottawa Citizen ~ Friday 8 May 1998
Entertainers Bobby Curtola, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Gordie Tapp joined fellow Canadians from fields as varied as medical research, sports and broadcasting yesterday to receive the Order of Canada at a ceremony at Rideau Hall. One by one, the 40 accomplished individuals rose from their seats as their names were called. They bowed before Gov.-Gen. Romeo LeBlanc and his wife, Diana Fowler LeBlanc, and accepted Canada's highest civilian honour.

"Can you believe this would happen to me? I am all shook up," said Mr. Curtola, a pop singer who made a name for himself in the 1960s. "It's a thrill. I thank you, Canada." Mr. Curtola was singled out for his tireless charity work for muscular dystrophy and service clubs across Canada, and for proving that Canadian artists could successfully pursue a career in the recording industry.

The 53-year-old singer, who now lives in Edmonton, was 15 when his first record, Hand in Hand With You, made him a star. He went from pumping gas at a Thunder Bay gas station to appearing on The Bob Hope Show.  Despite being the first Canadian artist to receive a gold record, Mr. Curtola showed signs of stage fright yesterday while receiving this most recent award. "Talk about nerves. I was sweating up there," said Mr. Curtola, who still performs before live crowds on a regular basis.

Bobby Curtola was one of Canada's early teen idols. He was born in Port Arthur, Thunder Bar, Ontario, in 1944. He started recording in 1960 and set up his own Tartan record label to achieve his objective since no-one else was interested in producing his records.

He formed a band whilst at high school in 1959, Bobby and the Bobcats. Then in 1960, Hand In Hand With You, which was co-written with Dyer Harton, became the first of a series of hits the best known of which was Fortune Teller in 1962, which was also a minor hit in the States (No 41). He enjoyed enormous commercial success in the late sixties enjoying five Top 10, four Top 30 and seven Top 100 Canadian hits.

In 1965 he hosted the Canadian T.V. teenage show 'After Four' and later in 1973 he fulfilled similar honours for the Canadian T.V. variety show 'Shake Rattle and Roll'. In the early seventies he was a regular attraction at Las Vegas.  Curtola was still recording new material.
