15. Bali: KERTHA GOSA PAVILION I
www.hillmanweb.com/indonesia/bali/b15.html

The Kertha Gosa Pavilion is an example of Balinese architecture in the city of Klungkung. The Kertha Gosa Pavilion at Klungkung Palace was built in the early 18th century by Dewa Agung Gusti Sideman. Kertha Gosa means - "the place where the king meets with his ministries to discuss questions of justice".

The first function of the pavilion was for the court of law in 1945. Kertha Gosa was repainted in the 1920s and again in the 1960s. The Pavilion has a section of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, called Bhima Swarga, depicted around the ceiling.

The Kertha Gosa was once the most important bale of the royal palace at Klungkung, and it was here that the raja and his judges would sit and discuss matters of law and human affairs. At some point it was decided that the story of Bhima Swarga, with its moralistic undertones, would be an appropriate decoration for such a high bale.

Kerta Gosa, The Historical Court of Justice

We took pictures of the various forms of punishment carried out in hell... Not sure where they went! Some are not pretty, but of course, these are "imagination of the artist". The one for "playboy" and for a woman having a baby out-of-wedlock were particularly gruesome. However, for those guilty of corruption, boiled in a vat of oil seems appropriate!

Admiring the Craftsman's Work
An artist was painting on a cloth with colours from natural stone.
He teaches this traditional art form when not at the pavilion
.

The artist also hand-painted wooden eggs.
It's amazing how every culture seems to have some form of these:
Ukrainian Easter Eggs, Russian Faberge eggs, Chinese painted eggs, etc.
