INTERESTING STREET SIGHTS
*** Mobile snacks!
We see a lot of motor bikes
with riders wearing helmets with emblems for Grab and Gotek.
These two companies can be ordered
via app, to take you somewhere, to deliver groceries you ordered on line,
etc.
They also have cars but motor
bikes are what is most indemand.
GoTek is the most successful
company used not only in Indonesia but spreading to other countries.
*** As with many of the SE Asia
countries, the power lines are "interesting"
These are not as crazy as ones
we've seen in Thailand, India...
A MILITARY COMPLEX
INTERESTING HIGHRISES
*** Most of these are commercial
buildings
These modern buildings are usually
surrounded by old buildings,
often with businesses on the
ground floor and living quarters upstairs.
Quite a contrast in living conditions
*** One of the buildings that
comprise the shopping centre.
There are malls called Upper
Soho, Central Park, etc.
*** The massive chartreus coloured
building is a wholesale outlet for fabric!
Vera said there are over a thousand
shops inside!
*** Apartments of the rich: THIS
was the most amazing block of apartments!
The penthouse would be amazing
and "fairly costly"!
*** Beautiful hotel!
A TRADITIONAL "FAMILY DINNER"
We watched a political debate
broadcast on TV while we were having dinner on March 30
Is this Obama's doppleganger?
This is the present president
of Indonesia who seems to have majority approval.
Elections are April 17th. He
has fulfilled mnyy of his election promises,
such as 1000 km of new highways
and many canals to help the farmers in irrigation.
This was during our "family
dinner" at a traditional Indonesian restaurant.
.THE MENU
We sat at a long table, and
the waiter brought
small dishes of various foods,
saucer sized plates for us to share.
The waiter had plates all the
way up his forearm - no serving tray needed!
We were also given small metal
bowls of hot water
to wash our handsas we were
expected to eat with our hands,
and a plate of rice.
There was also jackfruit - not
a favourite.
Mackerel cooked with lemongrass
and coconut milk. Nice flavour and texture.
Spicy fried chicken, mackerel
in spicy chili sauce, boiled egg, curry chicken,
A dessert that Sue-On used to
make, coconut milk jello and fruit
Cassava leaves - not a favourite
- dish and tough, and shrimp in chili sauce
The dark plate is pretty tasty
Beef Rendang but the meat was pretty tough.
Egg plant and curry chicken.
Cucumber was great to cool down
the spice
Deep fried aubergine and chili
sauce (more like marinera)
Java is such a contrast to Medan
city in Sumatra.
Being the capital city, it is
more prosperous, it is much cleaner and better maintained.
