18. Tombs of the Kings

www.hillmanweb.com/indonesia/sumatra/18s.html

We walked through this mini-mall on our way to the tomb site
Every stall sells pretty much the same items, woven cloth, key rings, other souvenirs

.
Entrance to the tombs in Tomok and The tomb of the last two "kings and queens"

.
Ancient tombs of the "kings of the clan" ~ The large ones to the left are the "kings"
They are called kings but are more like the head of the clan.
The low one on the right side of the photo is the oldest.
Others are soldiers.
The ones with crosses are people who died after Christianity reached Indonesia
- the Lutherans from Germany.
Before that period, they believed in "animism"
When a person dies, the body is buried in a hillside.
After a few years, when the flesh has disappeared,
the bones are collected at noon by the "uncle" of the family.
They are then buried in a sarcophagus.
Everyone in the village gathers for lunch, then it's music and dancing - a celebration of life?

Our group with grandfather and uncle.

For Bill, he looked like he was wearing a kilt, which is appropriate for his Scottish ancestry.
However, his head ...umm... Shriner or KKK?

This is the village of the grandfather of our CEO Vera.
They dressed us in traditional clothes and taught us the basic steps of a simple dance.
