1. Sue-On had the Laksa Ayam - spicy, tangy noodle
soup with fish and shrimp flavoured with mint and herbs.
2. TP had the Curry Chicken with toast, and two rice
rolls with shrimp.
Bill, still suffering from a major chest cold, wasn't
too hungry,
so he had spring rolls (nothing like what we make
at home) and a bowl of broth which he used as dip.
He loved the fresh thick coconut milk
- almost like the ice cream he craving for ice-cream
during the whole trip.
Sue-On spotted chendol on the menu - even better than
the ones we had in 2013!
It's a combo of crushed ice, coconut milk, palm sugar
syrup, red beans,
and a noodle of some sort flavoured with pandan leaf.
Amazing and refreshing.

A sneak peek at the kitchen.

COOKING WORKSHOP
1. Then we went upstairs to the kuih workshop
2. Simple set up with all the ingredients and wooden
moulds.
.
1. The instructor's hands showing rolling technique.
This catering had an order for 1000 pieces of this
particular kuih for a private funtion tomorrow.
Possibly a baby's first month party.
2. The coconut, palm sugar and coconut milk filling.
It is squeezed into a ball small enough to be wrapped
in a circle of pink dough.
.
.
1. The assistant bringing in squares of banana leaf
to place the finished kuih on before steaming.
2. The ball is placed into one of the wooden moulds
~ Using the hand to flatten down the dough.
.
1. TP and Sue-On comparing techniques.
2. The finished kuih. This particular one is used
to symbolize the turtle, for longevity.
.
Solo efforts by Sue-On and TP at making turtle kuihs
.
1. Bill decided to upstage everyone with his "man-size"
kuih.
2. One of the folks manning the steamers that cook
the kuih.
.
Next, we watched a short video about Kuih Culture
We then moved to the photo backdrop stages:
1. Bill working the press
2. A United effort between two long time foodie friends!
.
Next: We carried our fresh-cooked deserts to market
out on the streets of Georgetown.
1. Bill volunteered to show the ladies how to lift
such a heavy load. . . had a bit of trouble.
2. Sue-On: "I've got this! It's in my DNA!"
3. Teck Poh Choo may be tiny of stature, but she is
strong with a big heart.
Soon after, we had to say bye to my friend as she
had to pick up her daughter and college.
She also jhas six students staying with her this weekend
-who were working at a senior citizens school,
working the streets to listen to stories of street
people, etc.
It was such a short visit, but we are glad she was
able to accommodate us at such short notice.
