In 2012 the U.S. Postal Service continues its Celebrating Lunar New
Year series with a Year of the Dragon stamp, the fifth in the series. The
stamp art shows the head of a colorful dragon against a brilliant blue
sky. The Year of the Dragon begins on January 23, 2012, and ends on February
9, 2013.
The occasion is marked in various ways across many cultures, often with parades and parties. Performing before delighted crowds, skilled teams of dancers manipulate colorful dragon figures such as the one depicted in the stamp art. By tradition, dragons are not feared, but are considered magical or divine, hence auspicious at this time of renewed hope for the future. Lucky foods are eaten — kumquats, for example — and given as gifts. Festive lanterns, colored red for luck, are common decorations at Lunar New Year celebrations, where they are frequently hung in rows. |

[DIHM SUHM] Cantonese for "heart's delight," dim sum includes a variety of small, mouth-watering dishes such as steamed or fried dumplings, shrimp balls, steamed buns and Chinese pastries. Dim sum — standard fare in tea houses — can be enjoyed any time of the day. Unlike most dining establishments, servers in a dim sum eatery do not take orders, per se. Instead, they walk among the tables with carts or trays of kitchen-fresh food. Diners simply point to the item they want, which is served on small plates or in baskets. Each item usually has a set price. At the end of the meal, the check is tallied by counting the dishes on the table. Some dim sum restaurants add the price of each dish to a check that remains on the table, clearing dishes as they are emptied. |
