Day 2 ~ 99.08.24 ~ Sod Turning
for Mr. Stone's Stone Just a Little Outside of Stone
The highlight of day 2 was a visit to the memorial site on A51 [1]. My mother and I were involved in the sod breaking [2] in preparation [5] for the installing [3] of the memorial stone [4]. It was at this site that we also had the pleasure of meeting Legion secretary, Peter Berrisford [6]. Peter, a decorated WWII commando and former journalist,  is well known in the area for his prowess as a gardener. The finder, keeper and installer of this impressive stone was Mr. Stone [7], a farmer from Stone. Mr. Stone, with the help of his son[8] and a powerful farm tractor, proceeded to lower the stone into its cement foundation while the three Sandon Legionnaires supervised [9] and worked at grooming the site. Following the installation of the monument stone, Peter invited the Canadian visitors to his home, Purl Cottage [10], where his wife Gwen had a pot of hot tea waiting for us. Later, the Mitchell family joined us for a late night supper in the elegant dining room of the Crown.
